Europe (Britain to C. Russia), N. Africa. Because of variation in size and number of capitula, some believe that the plants with more numerous capitula and smaller flowers should be placed in a separate species, P. uliginosa Stev., which corresponds to P. dysenterica var. microcephala Boiss. However, although large and small individuals may be observed among collections, there is every stage of intermediacy between them and it seems better to regard this as a unified species.
