Soviet Armenia, N.W. Iran, W. Syria. Ir.-Tur. element. Closely allied to the purple-flowered S. suberosa and S. phaeopappa.
The presence or absence of a leafy stem seems to be the only consistent difference between plants referable to the two subspecies; this character does however, separate two groups with largely different geographical distributions. Literature records of S. mollis have been excluded because of possible confusion with other closely allied species.
