S. mollis Bieb., Fl. Taur.-Cauc. 3:522 (1819). Erect caulescent or subscapigerous perennial, (5-)15-35 cm; rootstock cylin-drical, sometimes branching. Leaves entire, 10-22 x 0.2-0.5 cm, linear, margin plane or undulate, base amplexicaul. Capitula 1-several per stem, 25-45 mm long. Inner phyllaries up to 45 mm. Flowers yellow. Achenes 15-20 x 6-9 mm, ridged, transversely lamellate-rugulose, glabrous; pappus white, hairs dimorphic, bar-bellate above and plumose below or entirely plumose. Fl. 4-6. 1. Plants caulescent; stems leafy subsp. mollis 1. Plants subscapigerous, stems lacking or with much reduced leaves subsp. szowitzii subsp. szowitzii (DC.) Chamberlain in Notes R.B.G. The presence or absence of a leafy stem seems to be the only consistent difference between plants referable to the two subspecies; this character does however, separate two groups with largely different geographical distributions. Literature records of S. mollis have been excluded because of possible confusion with other closely allied species. |
