Allied to S. pulchra Lomak. and S. sosnowskyi Lipschitz, both Caucasian species. Very variable, especially in its leaf shape and indumentum. S. tomentosa var. undulatifolia (including S. pseudotomentosa and S. sintenisii) may represent a taxon with sparser indumentum and undulate leaves which appears to be commoner in the Eastern part of the species' range. However, these characters are not completely correlated. The pappus hairs are almost always barbellate but the occurrence of plumose hairs in S. woronowii, the major distinguishing feature cited, does not warrant the recognition of a separate taxon. S. tomentosa may hybridise with S. latifolia. |
