S. eriospermus DC, Prodr. 6:358 (1838). Floccose perennial 30-60 cm. Basal leaves petiolate, ovate to oblong, acute, lobed to pinnatifid, cauline similar but amplexicaul; all leaves sparsely floccose above, densely so below. Capitula radiate, 6-18 in a lax corymb, 2.5-4 cm broad. Phyllaries 7-9 mm, lanceolate, floccose or glandular-pubescent. Calycular bracts 2-6 mm, linear. Ligules 10-16(-18) mm, yellow. Disc flowers 4-lobed. Achenes 5-6 mm, hairy between ribs. Pappus 8-9 mm, dirty white. Fl. 6-8. Rocky slopes, scree, alpine meadow, 1600-3300 m. 1. Phyllaries floccose var. eriospermus 1.
