Leaves coriaceous, lyrate-pinnatifid to lyrate-pinnate/pinnatisect, 16-20 x 5-6 cm, lateral segments c. 2-4-paired, coarsely serrate in lower leaves, becoming entire above. Capitula pedunculate in loose ± fastigiate corymbose panicles. Involucre cup-shaped, 17-22 x 10-15 mm; outer phyllaries c. 7-seriate, ovate-mucronate, yellowish-green, inner longer and more irregularly arranged. Flowers purple, slightly exceeding involucre. Pappus of barbellate hairs. Fl. 7-8. Dry gravelly hills, fallow fields, 1100 -1830 m. Syntypes: [Caucasia] in glareosis et lapidosis prov.
