T. cadmeum (Boiss.) Heywood in Notes R.B.G. Edinb. 21:58 (1952). Figure 13, p. 265. Caespitose herb with somewhat woody rootstock. Stems 10-30 cm, ascending, leafy, pubescent or tomentose. Basal leaves 2-pinnatisect, 3-6 cm (incl. petioles 0.5-1.5 cm), linear-oblanceolate in outline, greyish-pubescent; primary segments 10-20-paired, 4-8 mm, bearing 3-17 linear-oblanceolate acute entire lobes 1-1.5 x 0.4 mm; cauline leaves 10-12, becoming sessile and smaller above, uppermost often 1-pinnatisect. Capitula (7-)10-50 in dense terminal corymbs. Involucre 3-5(-6) mm broad; phyllaries 3-4-seriate, lanceolate to linear-oblong, 2-3.5 mm, brown- or whitish-scarious at apex, densely tomentose. Ray flowers 12-15, golden-yellow; ligules c. 1.5 x 1.5 mm, 3-toothed at apex. Disc flowers 2.5 mm. Achenes brown, c. 1.5 mm, 4-5-ribbed; corona a minute rim less than 0.1 mm. Fl. 6-8. 1. Capitula usually 7-20 per corymb; stems 10-20 cm (mainly S.W. Anatolia) subsp. cadmeum 1. Capitula usually 25-35 per corymb; stems 18-25 cm (mainly C. &E. Anatolia) subsp. orientale subsp. orientale Grierson in Notes R.B.G. Edinb. 33:261 (1974). Map 25, p, 275, Pastures, stony slopes, earthy hollows, ravines, limestone screes, 1400-2000 m. T. cadmeum is smaller than either T. chiliophyllum or T. argyrophyllum, and in its stature and spreading habit is more similar to the more easterly T. densum. In size its leaves are similar to the last-named species, but the lobes do not remain contiguous in the adult condition, as they generally do in T. densum, and are clearly separated one from the other and linear in shape, The phyllaries are fairly densely tomentose and the ligules are only slightly longer than the involucre. |
