Caespitose, densely greyish-white tomentose herb with woody rootstock. Stems 8-20 cm. Basal leaves subpalmatisect, 1-2.5 cm (incl. c. 0.5-1 cm petioles), broadly ovate or orbicular in outline; primary segments 2-3-paired, entire or divided into 3-5 linear, acute segments 2-10x0.4 mm; cauline leaves sessile, pinnatisect, lanceolate in outline, bearing up to 3 pairs of lateral segments; upper leaves becoming simpler. Capitula solitary on ± naked peduncles. Involucre 0.8-1.3 cm broad; phyllaries brown- or blackish-margined, outer linear-lanceolate, 3.5 x1.5 mm, inner oblanceolate, up to 7 mm, widening and scarious-lacerate (c. 3 mm broad) at apex. Ray flowers c. 12-20, white, ligules 6-12 x 2.5-5 mm, apex shallowly 3-toothed. Disc flowers 2.5-3.5 mm. Achenes brown, 2-2.5 mm, 4-5-ribbed; corona 1-1.5 mm, ± unilateral (only or more strongly developed on posterior side of achene), unevenly notched at apex. Fl. 7-8. Rocky limestone slopes, crevices and screes, 1450-3580 m.

N.W. Iran, N. Iraq. Ir.-Tur. element. Among the group of species belonging to this group which includes T. armenum, T. heterotomum, T. oxystegium and T. alyssifolium, T. kotschyi is to be recognized by its compact basal leaves which are generally 2-pinnatisect and almost orbicular in outline; the capitula are broader, nearly hemispherical, the corona is c. ½ as long as the achene and entire or toothed at apex. There appears to be little justification for Nábělek's var. griseum, supposedly a finer, taller (15-22 cm) plant with leaves bearing more numerous (12-18) segments. Such variability seems to be within the bounds of normality for this species,
