T. assemanii Blanche in Boiss., Fl. Or. 3:791 (1875). Syn: T. primigenium Hand.-Mazz., Monogr. Tarax. 17 (1907) pro parte; T. primigeniforme van Soest in Proc. Koninkl. Nederl. Akad. Wetensch. ser. C, 69:364 (1966)!
Plant base hairy. Leaves narrowly obovate or lanceolate, often shortly lobate or sharply dentate. Involucre narrow (3-4 mm broad), c. 8 mm long; outer phyllaries narrowly ovate or lanceolate, short (up to 3.5 mm), blackish or pale pinkish-brown, with a narrow whitish margin. Ligules pale yellow, ± red on outside. Stigmas pure yellow. Achenes straw-coloured, inconspicuously elongated into cone; pappus 4 mm, very pale brownish. Fl. 7-8(-9). Damp places in calcareous mountains, mostly above 2000 m.
Type: [Lebanon] ad fontes et rivulos supra Dimam et ad Hasram, Blanche (holo. G, iso. JE!).

Konya: between N. Karaca De. and Uç Pinar, S. of Bozkir, 2000 m, D. 14596! C5 Niğde: Bulgar Da., in valley at foot of Metdesis summit, 2743 m, Kotschy 152x! above Bulgar Maden, Bal. 644 (type of T. primigeniforme)!
N. Iraq, Lebanon, Syria. Ir.-Tur. element. There is confusion in the numbering of the Kotschy specimens; the Bulgar Da. locality is mentioned under 152c (cf. 6. T. oliganthum) as well as Gisyl Deppe. A specimen from C4 Içel (Anamur, Çamurlu Y. to Olucak, 2000 m, D. 16299!) may belong to T. assemanii. When no achenes are present, T. assemanii can easily be confused with T. bithynicum D C.; in the latter the pappus is white and a beak is present.
