T. bessarabicum (Hornem.) Hand.-Mazz., Monogr. Tarax. 26 (1907).
Plant base sparingly hairy; leaves glabrous, ± fleshy, lobate; side lobes ± triangular, ± dentate, acute, mostly spreading. Scapes mostly ± arachnoid below capitulum. Involucre subcylindrical, narrow, mostly pale reddish-brown. Ligules red-purple on outside; stigmas pure yellow. Achenes straw-coloured, pale brown or reddish-brown, 4-6 mm, spinulose at apex, with a ± cylindrical, 1 mm cone; beak 4-5-5 mm; pappus pale reddish-brown to very pale violet. Fl. (7-)8-10(-ll). Saline places, fields, 900-3000 m.

Richards informs me that T. fulvipile Harvey is synonymous with T. bessarabicum. Handel-Mazzetti was in error when he stated that it was identical with T. microcephalum sensu Hand.-Mazz.
