Plant small. Leaves with few, short, triangular side lobes and ± obtuse terminal lobe; petioles pink. Involucre bright green, outer phyllaries up to 3.5 mm broad, strongly recurved at tip. Ligules pale yellow; stigmas dirty yellow or greenish. Achenes deep brown-red, 4-4.5 mm (incl. 1.3 mm cone); beak 8 mm. 2n= 16, 24. Fl. 4-6. Roadsides, fields, rocky places, 150-2300 m.

T. armeniacum Schischkin, according to the description in Fl. URSS 29:50 (1964), is possibly identical with T. buttleri, but the achenes (incl. cone) seem to be smaller; in particular the cone is shorter. Further study is necessary. T. armeniacum is recorded from 'Armenia-Kurdistan'.
