T. coloratus C.A.Meyer, Verz. Pfl. Cauc. 61 (1831). Figure 25, p. 661. Glabrous biennial, 10-50 cm. Stems usually several, branched. Leaves narrowly linear. Peduncles swollen below capitula. Phyllaries 5-8, lanceolate, usually longer than flowers, 1.5-2.5 cm in flowering capitulum, 3-5(-7) cm in fruiting capitulum. Flowers lilac to purple or pink. Achenes pale brown, 16-25 mm, with 5 longitudinal rows of ± separate scales and 5 rows of shorter scales between, beak shorter than achene, clavate at apex. Pappus 14-20 mm, purplish, annulus very sparsely hairy. Fl. 5-8. Stony places, 350-2500 m.
