Syr. t. 220 (1930) as Chamaemelum oreades. Rhizomatous perennial, 10-40 cm. Stems either solitary or 2 to many, usually unbranched above, occasionally with 2-4 small branches at apex. Leaves 1-2-pinnatisect, sometimes lower leaves reaching up to 12 cm; laciniae lanceolate-linear or linear-filiform, acute, mucronate, sparsely or densely distributed. Capitula usually solitary, occasionally 2-9, radiate, 1-1.8 cm broad (excl. ligules), borne on leafy or naked, glabrous or pubescent, long or short peduncles. Outer phyllaries triangular-acute, glabrous or pubescent, inner oblong, subobtuse; margins membranous, brown or dark brown, rarely brownish-black. Receptacle ovoid-conical, ovoid or ± hemispherical. Ligules 6-15 mm; corolla lobes of disc flowers eglandular at tips. Achenes ± compressed, 1.5-2.2 x 0.6-1 mm, base truncate, dark brown or blackish at maturity, mucilaginous, anteriorly smooth, finely lineolate, sometimes obscurely tuberculate, tuberculate-rugulose, rugose or rarely 1-ribbed, posteriorly 3-ribbed, ribs thickened, white; corona lobulate, white, usually ⅓, rarely ¼ as long as achene. Fl. 3-8. Open slopes, meadows, granite rocks, streams, etc., 30-3200 m. 1. Achenes anteriorly smooth, lineolate, 1-ribbed, tuberculate or tuberculate-rugulose var. oreades 1.
