Very widespread in N. and S. hemispheres. Both rugose and spiny-spored types occur in Turkey. They are not correlated with the morphological types of the frond, nor do they show a distinctive geographical or altitudinal distribution. The rugose spore type is separated by many authors as C. dickeiana Sim.
