Asia, N. & S. America, S. Africa and Australasia. An extremely variable species which typically occupies ruderal and segetal habitats. Closely related to B.tenuiflora and B.incrassata; unlike them, the weedy habit of B. arvensis has enabled it to colonize* suitable temperate habitats throughout the world. No meaningful infraspecific division appears to be feasible, though locally differentiated, partially cieistogamous and probably inbreeding populations have often been assigned specific names. |
