(except at inflorescence) unbranched, retrorse-pilose to glabrescent below, patent to antrorse-pilose in upper part. Rosette leaves ± distinctly petiolate, elliptic to spathulate, to 10 x 1 cm, glabrous beneath, with distinct retrorse setae on margins and antrorse setae or hairs on upper surface. Cauline leaves narrowly ovate to spathulate, of very different size, ± equally hairy on both sides. Calyx to 6 mm in fruit, with glabrescent surface and straight (rarely indistinctly hooked) hairs on margins and base, persistent. Limb of corolla to 8 mm diam., flat, deep blue. N.W. Iran. Euxine (mt.) element. Within M. alpestris there are specimens with glabrescent leaves and calyces which may be transitions to M. olympica, but it seems that there is at least a distinct difference in the nutlets. Stainton's collection from Ikizdere differs in having a more creeping habit, more glabrous leaves and shorter hairs on the calyx. It may be a different form of lower altitudes, but since the specimen is very young further investigations are needed.
