C. stevenii Bieb., Fl. Taur.-Cauc. 3:138 (1819). Figure 3, p. 51. Pubescent to glabrous perennial. Rhizome thin, creeping, ± stoloniferous.
Stems ascending-erect, (6-)15-30(-40) cm, thin, simple or slightly branched toward inflorescence, pubescent below, glabrous above. Leaves crenate-serrate to (upper) entire; basal oblong, spathulate, to 6 x 1 .5 cm, obtuse or attenuate, narrowed into petiole to 6 cm; lower cauline oblong, lanceolate, acute, ± petiolate or sessile;upper linear-lanceolate to linear, sessile. Flowers erect, long-pedicellate, single, terminal or in lax 2-5-flowered inflorescence. Calyx lobes linear-lanceolate, (5-)8-l 1 x 1 mm, erect, glabrous, as long or longer than obconical ovary. Corolla broadly infundibular, (l2-)18-25(-30) x 20-25 mm, divided to 1/3-1/2 into ovate acute lobes, glabrous, lavender blue or pale blue-violet. Style included. Stigmas 3, elongate. Capsule elongate-obconical. 10-15x4-5 mm, opening by 3 subapical pores. Seeds elongate, ellipsoid, 1 x 0.3-0.4 mm, brown, shiny.

Distribution of species (incl. C. altaica Ledeb. and C. wolgensis P. Smirnov): C. & S. Russia, Caucasia, N. & N.W. Iran, C. Asia (Transcaspia to N. Mongolia), W. Siberia. A polymorphic group of closely related taxa differing only in minor characters. Subsp. beauverdiana differs from subsp. stevenii only in the ± papillose ovary. The other differences - size and form of corolla, flower colour and length of stigmas (see Fomin, loc. cit., 1905) - are not correlated. In E. Anatolia both subspecies occur sometimes together, but subsp. beauverdiana is absent in the Caucasus and commoner in N. and N.W. Iran.
