C. dichotomum L., Sp. PL 438 (1753). Glandular-pubescent annual. Stems ± erect, dichotomously and divaricately branched, 6-20 cm. Leaves ovate-oblong to lanceolate-oblong, ± obtuse, pilose. Inflorescence lax to condensed, many-flowered. Bracts herbaceous. Calyx some-what to strongly inflated in fruit. Sepals ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, 7-11 mm, with scarious margins, pilose, often glandular. Petals shorter than the sepals. Capsules long-exserted from the calyx, 14-24 mm, opening by flat teeth. 2 sub-species may be recognised: 1. Inflorescence dense; calyx little inflated in fruit subsp. dichotomum 1. Inflorescence rather lax; calyx much inflated in fruit subsp. inflatum subsp. dichotomum. Fl. 4-6. Slopes, vineyards, cultivated ground, 500-2500 m. Described from Spain (Hb. Linn. 603/11).
