D. erythrocoleus Boiss., Fl. Or. 1: 493 (1867). Figure 2, p. 107. Perennial, 5-21 cm. Leaves linear, 1-5 cm x 0.6-1.4 mm, margins thick, apices acuminate or acute. Flowering stem leaves in 1-3 pairs, at least the upper pair with an inflated purple base. Flowers solitary, or rarely stems branched above and pedicels at least 2 mm. Bracteoles 4, ?-½ calyx length, purple or dark brown, ovate, narrowed abruptly into a green cuspidate, or sometimes brown aristate apex, margins purple, membranous. Calyx (14-)17-24 x 3-3.7 mm, subcylindrical but widest in the lower half, purple, teeth (4.5-)6.5-7 mm, lanceolate, acuminate to mucronate, margins scarious, ciliate. Petal limb pink, rarely darker, or white, 3-7 mm, fimbriate, the undivided part cuneate, ebarbulate, claw exserted for 2-5 mm. Fl. 5-7. Screes and rocky slopes, 3160-3700 m. Type: [Turkey B8 Muş] in montibus excelsis Agerowdag Armeniae Kurdicae, Kotschy (G!). Specimens were cultivated in the Jardin de Valeyres, May 1862.
