Like M. anatolica but densely tufted to cushion-forming, the flowering shoots usually 3-8(-10) cm; inflorescence usually rather dense, 2-10-flowered but sometimes laxer and up to 25-flowered; sepals 2•5-4•5 mm, ovate to ovate-lanceolate (except in var. cappadocica), broadly acute, usually red-tinted; petals as long as or more usually longer than sepals (much longer in var. cappadocica). 1. Sepals lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, more than 3 x longer than broad, rarely red-tinted; petals more than 1•25 x longer than sepals var. cappadocica 1.
