M. erythrosepala (Boiss.) Hand.-Mazz. in Ann. Nat. Hofm. Wien 26: 148 (1912). Syn: Alsine erythrosepala Boiss., Diagn. ser. 1(8): 98 (1849)! Like M. anatolica but densely tufted to cushion-forming, the flowering shoots usually 3-8(-10) cm; inflorescence usually rather dense, 2-10-flowered but sometimes laxer and up to 25-flowered; sepals 2•5-4•5 mm, ovate to ovate-lanceolate (except in var. cappadocica), broadly acute, usually red-tinted; petals as long as or more usually longer than sepals (much longer in var. cappadocica). 1. Sepals lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, more than 3 x longer than broad, rarely red-tinted; petals more than 1•25 x longer than sepals var. cappadocica 1. Sepals ovate to ovate-lanceolate, less than 3 x longer than broad, usually red-tinted; petals usually less than 1•25 x longer than sepals var. erythrosepala var. erythrosepala. Fl. 6-8. Mountains, 1800-2500 m. Syntypes: [Turkey B2 Izmir] Tmolus supra Bozdagh, vii 1842, Boissier (G!); [A2 Bursa] in cacumine Olympi, viii 1842, Boissier (E! G! JE! K! LIVU!). May occur in Transcaucasia (M. granulifera), otherwise endemic. Small-flowered plants (sepals less than 3 mm) from E. Anatolia have been distinguished as a separate variety (var. orientalis - cf. McNeill in Notes R.B.G. Edinb. 24: 377, 1963). The supposed associated features of a lax many-flowered inflorescence is also found, however, in large-flowered plants (e.g. from vilayet Erzurum). The taxonomy of the species in E. Anatolia, including its relationships with M. granulifera (Fenzl) Grossh., requires further elucidation. |
