Like M. hirsuta but usually less than 10 cm, densely tufted, almost cushion-forming, only the upper stems and pedicels glandular-pubescent; bracts 3-5-veined, the uppermost always 3-veined; sepals often ovate, acuminate, 3-5(-7)-veined, the innermost usually 3-veined; petals not or a little longer than sepals. 1. Leaves rigid, terete to triangular in section, obscurely veined; petals shorter than sepals; plants very densely caespitose to pulvinate subsp. carica 1. Leaves usually flaccid and slightly flattened, if ± terete, then very flaccid or if rather rigid then prominently 3-veined; petals longer than sepals; plants rather densely caespitose subsp. oreina subsp. oreina (Mattf.)
