S. brevicaulis Boiss., Diagn. ser. 1(1): 34 (1843). Syn: S. antitaiirica Chowdh. in Notes R.B.G. Edinb. 22: 273 (1957)! Figure 5, p. 189. Perennial with a straggling woody caudex. Stems 5-15 cm, puberulous to pilose, sometimes viscid above. Leaves all similar, narrowly obovate, acute, 25-35 x 4-8(-9) mm, puberulous. Flowers solitary or 2-3 in a dichasium. Calyx 24-29 mm, slightly inflated, not sharply constricted below the capsule in fruit, reticulately veined, puberulous to pilose. Petals pink, the limb divided to c. 1/3 or less, auriculate. Anthophore 14-18 mm, glabrous. Capsules ovoid. Fl. 5-7. Cliffs, rocky places, 1000-2000 m. Type: [Turkey B7 Malatya] in monte Ak Dagh, Aucher 440. B6 Maraş: d. Göksun, Hübek Da., 2000 m, D. 20179 (type of 5. antitaurica)! B7 Malatya: Ismet Paşa to Gündüsbek, 1090 m, Hub.-Mor. 9032! C4 Içel: Ermenek to Mut, 13 vi 1950, Attila! C6 Maraş: Ahir Da., 2000 m, Haradj. 1632! Adiyaman: d. Besni, Erhenek, 1250 m, Hub.-Mor. 15217! C8 Mardin: 5 km E of Mardin, 1200 m, D. 28581! Endemic; very similar to S. araratica. Ir.-Tur. element. We can find no clear differences to separate S. antitaurica from 5. brevicaulis. Occasional broad-leaved variants have been named as S. brevicaulis var. latifolia Boiss., Fl. Or. 1: 623 (1867), but do not seem worth recognising formally. |
