Figure 5, p. 189. Biennial or short-lived perennial, completely glabrous. Stems.erect, up to 120 cm. Lower leaves forming a rosette, lanceolate-spathulate, rarely lanceolate or oblanceolate. Cauline leaves numerous, usually ovate, obtuse, rarely oblong-ovate or oblong, amplexicaul. Flowers in heads, the upper cauline leaves involu-crate. Calyx 16-20 mm, glabrous, somewhat constricted below the capsule in fruit. Petals bright pink, limb entire or rarely emarginate. Anthophore 8-12 mm, glabrous. Capsule oblong, ± included in the calyx. The distinctions between S. compacta and S. reuteriana Boiss. & Bl. from the Lebanon do not seem very strong. Though widespread, S. compacta is a local plant. |
