N. mucronata (Forssk.) Aschers. & Schweinf. in Mem. Inst. Egypt. 2: 131 (1887). Plant branched, branches usually spine-tipped, up to 1 mm, glabrous, papillose or bristly. Leaves 10-25 x 5 mm, with an ovate base, subulate or linear-filiform above. Bracts and bracteoles narrowly ovate, hardening, shorter than or exceeding the flowers. Perianth 3-4 mm, glabrous, the segments winged, wing with an entire or erose margin. Style elongate, thick. 1. Leaves 1-2.5 cm; bracts not or scarcely exceeding the flowers; branches usually numerous, short, spreading subsp. mucronata 1. Leaves 3-4 cm; bracts exceeding the flowers; branches themselves little-branched, elongate subsp. tournefortii subsp. mucronata. Syn: Salsola mucronata Forssk., Fl. Aeg.-Arab. 56 (1775); N. spinosissima Moq. in DC, Prodr. 13(2): 209 (1849). Fl. 5-7. Sandy and stony steppes, 500-2000 m. Described from Egypt: Alexandria, at the catacombs.
