Plant glabrous and smooth, occasionally somewhat roughly bristly-hairy. Leaves thickish, semicircular in the lower part, ± circular above, with a strong pointed apex. Bracts and bracteoles swollen at the base in fruit, ± connivent, falling with the flowers. Perianth yellowish, urceolate, longer than broad, the segments with 1-3 strong longitudinal nerves on the back in the lower part, wingless, at most with blunt tubercles or a triangular apex, the tips of the segments weakly crumpled. Fl. 5-7. On sandy, salt-rich soils near the sea; scattered and partly naturalised in sandy, salty places inland, s. 1.-1900 m.
