N. Africa, S. Europe, Cyprus, Caucasia, W. Syria, Syrian Desert, N.W. & W. Iran, eastwards to Turkestan. Although this widespread species grows elsewhere in the Mediterranean, in Turkey its distribution is largely Irano-Turanian. Var. angustifolius, retained by Sa'ad (op. cit. p. 130), appears to be a smaller, narrower-leaved form which is possibly a habitat modification.
