S. olivieri Coulter, Mem. Dips. 36 (1823). Figure 18, p. 605. Ascending annual with shortly pilose to glabrescent stems, c. 30 cm tall. Leaves elliptic, entire, sessile, canescent-pilose. Involucral bracts 4-6, ovate, pilose, shorter than flowers. Capitula c. 0•5 cm diam., ± radiant; flowers purple. Involucel c. 1•5 mm long, adpressed-hairy, pits obovate, c. 0•5 mm long, ribs between pits not sulcate. Corona 0•5 mm, 20-24-nerved. Calyx very shortly stipitate, hairy; setae 3-4 mm. Fl. 8. Steppe.
