E. cheiradenia Boiss. & Hohen. in Boiss., Diagn. ser. 1(12): 112 (1853). Syn: E. schizadenia Boiss. & Hohen. in Boiss., op. cit. 113 (1853) pro syn.! E. bothriosperma Boiss. & Kotschy ex Boiss., Cent. Euphorb. 36 (1860)! Ic: Mouterde, Nouv. Fl. Lib. Syr. 2: t. 209 f. 2 (1970); Fl. Pal. 2: t. 419 (1972). Figure 17. Glabrous, rarely pubescent somewhat glaucous perennial. Stems several, to 40 cm, arising from a woody stock. Cauline leaves oblanceolate to elliptic-oblong or elliptic-ovate, (10-)l 5-32 x 2-12(-16) mm, apex obtuse or sub-acute, sometimes mucronulate, margin ± entire. Ray-leaves ovate, ovate-rhombic or suborbicular. Raylet-leaves yellow at first, later becoming green and sometimes pinkish-tinged, transversely ovate to ovate-deltoid or reniform, 5-10 x 7-20 mm, apex obtuse or rounded, mucronate, base ± truncate. Rays 3-6, not or once dichotomous; axillary rays 0-2. Glands usually 2- or more-horned or pectinate, horns often lobate. Cyathial lobes glabrous outside, ciliate. Fruit ovoid-conical, 3-4 mm diam., smooth, glabrous. Seeds compress-ed ovoid-ellipsoid, 3 mm, irregularly deeply pitted, pale grey; caruncle large, terminal, 1.5 mm. Fl. 4-8. Rocky places, eroded sandy and marly slopes, Quercus scrub, Artemisia steppe, pastures, corn and fallow fields, 1000-2900 m. Syntypes: [N. Iran] in monte Elbrus Persiae borealis prope Passgala, [21 v 1843], Kotschy 182 (BM! G! K!); [Turkey C7 Urfa] in Mesopotamia circa Diarbekir [Karaca Da., vi 1841], Kotschy 232 (BM! G! K! W!). Syria to Afghanistan. Ir.-Tur. element. A specimen from B7 Tunceli (Pülümur, 1700 m, M. & D. Zohary 3020!) is the only pubescent example of this usually quite glabrous species which I have seen. The pubescence is confined to the lower part of the main stem; the cauline leaves are minutely papillose. Mouterde (Nouv. Fl. Lib. Syr. 2:493, 1970) states that the related E. chaborasia Gombault (Syn: E. mesopotamica M.S. Khan), a species from Syria and Iraq, occurs in Turkey 'towards Diarbekir', as var. nazalena Mouterde; however, I have seen no specimen. Another allied species, E. cuspidata Bertol. (Syn: E. chesneyi Boiss.), from Syrian Desert, which, however, has ± smooth seeds, might also be expected to occur in Turkish Mesopotamia. |
