Stems several, simple, arising from stout woody stock. Lower cauline leaves obovate, 1.5-5 x 1-3 cm, often purple-tinged, obtuse or subacute, apex mucronate, margin ± entire, base cuneate or rounded; upper cauline leaves suborbicular or ovate, to 4 cm broad, not mucronate. Ray-leaves suborbicular to reniform, base shallowly cordate. Raylet-leaves reniform or transversely ovate, 1-2 x l-2.5(-3) cm, base rounded to cordate. Rays 5(-8), to 3 times dichotomous; axillary rays 0-2. Glands pectinate, crimson. Fruits ovoid-conical, trigonous, 7-8 mm diam. Seeds ovoid-quadrangular, 4-5 mm, tuberculate-rugulose, grey or brown; caruncle terminal, conical, 1.5 mm. Fl. 4-8. Quercus woods, scrub, rocky limestone and igneous slopes, steppe, ruins, 800-3050 m. Type: Aubriet's illustration in P, reproduced in Ann. Mus. Hist. Nat.
