Probably endemic. Ir.-Tur. element. According to the original description of A. lagopoides Lam., Encycl. 1:322 (1783), this species has yellow flowers, a point apparently overlooked by Boissier when he sank A. lagopodioides Vahl into it. It is possible that the observation on flower colour may apply to dried material, and if the flower colour of var. lagopoides is really purple, then the two species are synonymous. A. lagopoides was based on Tournefort's gathering from Armenia and therefore probably came from Turkey. Lamarck's A. lagopoides Lam. var. ß has purple flowers; this variety was taken up by several authors as being the same as A. lagopoides Lam. sensu stricto. As doubt surrounds the usage of the name A. lagopoides Lam., the later name A. lagopodioides is adopted here.
