Dwarf, alpine perennial. Leaflets 2, broadly cuneate-obovate to suborbicular, 4-15 x 4-13 mm, thick, glaucous, usually glabrous. Flowers solitary, long-peduncled, carmine, 16-20 mm. Calyx 7-9 mm. scarcely gibbous; teeth subequal, narrowly triangular, less than half as long as tube. Legume linear-oblong, 25-35 mm, tapering below, 3-5-seeded. Seeds globose, smooth. Fl. 6-8. Loose screes, 2100-3530 m.

Lebanon, N. Iraq, N. & N.W. Iran, Caucasia. Rather variable in the size and form of its leaflets. Part of the gathering from Hakkari (D. 24504) has sparsely pubescent leaflets, approaching material from N. Iraq recently distinguished as Pisum formosum var. pubescens C. C. Townsend (Kew Bull. 21:455, 1968). A very beautiful species.
