Robust herbs to 50 cm. Stems simple, stout, often several from a basal rosette, of 6-10(-12) internodes; flowers forming a terminal head and also in axils of upper leaves. Leaves 30-100 x 10-30 mm, ovate-lanceolate, subacute, 3-nerved, ± connate at base and, especially lower ones, forming a sheath. Flowers 4-merous, sessile. Calyx 8-15 mm, divided to c. 1/2 lobes triangular. Corolla blue, often purplish and green-marked outside, 15-30 mm; intermediate lobes irregular, short. Capsule narrow, sessile or subsessile. Fl. 7-9. Woodland margins and grassland, 800-2500 m.

Mainly C. & S. Europe, N, C. & S. Russia, Caucasia, N. & W. Iran (rare), W. Siberia. Euro-Sib. element. Some Turkish plants have long narrow calyx lobes, 1/2 as long as the corolla. Similar plants from the Balkans were described as G. phlogifolia Schott & Kotschy, but do not warrant formal recognition.
