N. heliotropifolia Lam., Encycl. 1:711 (1785). Syn: N. ucranica auct. turc. non L. (1753). var. heliotropifolia. Map 44. Similar to N. stricta but calyces longer with slender triangular-lanceolate teeth equal to or longer than tube, and generally longer bracteoles. Fl. 5-6. Shaly and igneous slopes, steppe, banks, fallow fields and pastures, 1020-2100 m. Type: Described from the Levant ('Cataria orientalis minor, foliis Helio-tropii'), Tournefort (holo. P—Tourn. 1430, photo!). E. Anatolia. A9 Kars: Kars, 1800 m, D. 29558! A9/B8 Erzurum: Aras river gorge, 1700 m, Tobey 2095! B8 Erzincan: Tercan to Aşkale, above Tercan, 1650 m, D. 29352! B9 Ağri: 3-5 km from Tutak to Hamur (Murat valley), 1600 m, D. 44042! Van: Kurubaş, 6 km S.E. of Van, 1850 m, D. 44587! N.W. & W. Iran. Ir.-Tur. element. None of the Turkish specimens examined was fully mature. The calyx teeth in the Turkish material appear to remain erect whereas in mature specimens from Iranian Kurdistan they often recurve. The specimens from Kars have clearly crenate leaves and match the S.E. Caucasian TV. schischkinii Pojark. (Fl. URSS 20:356, 1954) which also appears to occur in Iranian Azerbaijan. Further study of the group will show whether separate status is justified. Three other varieties (var. gilanica Bornm., var. major Boiss., var. rectidens Bornm.) occur in N. & N.W. Iran; see discussion by Hedge & Lamond in Notes R.B.G. Edinb. 38:45-46 (1980). |
