Mediterranean area, Transcaucasia, N.W., W. & S.W. Iran, N. Iraq. Medit. element. Zahariadi (Fl. Europaea 5:37, 1980) would place, by implication, most of the Turkish plants in his O. ponticum Zahar. (Rev. Roum. Bioi. (Bot.) 10:290, 1965), but the distinctions he gives between this and O. narbonense break down in the Turkish material. Indeed, the differences he uses to separate both from the C. European O. pyramidale L. are also slight and require further investigation. The name O. brachystachys C. Koch has been applied to smallish plants with short racemes and denticulate leaf margins. These intergrade completely with the larger O. narbonense; the leaf margin character is particularly difficult, varying in occurrence and extent from leaf to leaf on the same plant. |
