A gathering from S. Anatolia [C6 Gaziantep: Aintab (Gaziantep), 1884, G. Post (BM!)} seems doubtful on distributional grounds; although the occurrence of this species in Lebanon might perhaps indicate the possibility of its occurring in the Amanus mts., it has not been re-collected in this area and Post's gathering may have been wrongly labelled. Material with a relatively long corolla tube and shallowly incised corona has been separated as P. hyacinthoides; in view of the great variability and lack of correlation between these two characters it cannot be maintained as a separate species. Rix (Bulb Book 43, 1981, with colour photo) recently collected a greenish-flowered variant from C10 Hakkari: nr Yüksekova, Rix 1926; it also occurs near Van G. S. of Bitlis, and in Azerbaijan. Rix noted that it grows in separate populations to the typical form and usually at lower altitudes. It may be worthy of infraspecific recognition, but no material has been seen. |
