Leaves obovate-oblong to elliptic. 12-20 cm, shortly and bluntly acuminate or ± obtuse, glossy above, ferrugineous-pubescent beneath, coriaceous. Pedicels stout, tomentose. Flowers fragrant, white, cup-shaped, 15-20 cm diam. Sepals 3, petaloid. Petals 6(-12), obovate. Filaments purple. Fruit ovoid, 7-10 cm, rusty-tomentose. Fl. 4-5. Street tree, nr s.l. Type not indicated. N.W. Turkey. A2(E/A) Istanbul: planted as a street tree in the Bosphorus area, Kit-Tan obs.; Prinkipo (Büyük ada), Eliçin obs. (Türk. Biol. Derg. 20:132-134, 1970). Native of southern N. America from the Carolinas S. to Florida and Texas; planted as an ornamental in the warmer regions of the Old World. |
