G. grandiflorum Boiss. &Huet in Boiss., Diagn., ser. 2(5): 15(1856). Ic: Fedde, Pflanzenr., 40 (TV. 104): f. 28, E-F (1909). Perennial with 1 main stem, erect, scabrid, 30-50 cm. Radical leaves sublyrate-pinnatifid or pinnatisect, with obovate-oblong, acutely dentate segments. Stem leaves similar, though smaller and amplexicaul. Sepals 3-5 cm, scabrous-hirsute. Petals (3-)4-6 cm, dark orange to crimson, with a darker spot at the base. Fruits borne on peduncles which exceed the leaves subtending them, adpressed pilose, 10-15 cm. 2 varieties may be recognised: 1. Peduncles erect in fruit; fruit straight var. grandiflorum 1. Unknown apart from the type gathering. A striking variant reminiscent of G. corniculatum subsp. refractum in its refracted peduncles, but easily distinguished by its larger, redder flowers. |
