Papaver L. |
P. persicum Lindl. in Edwards' Bot. Reg. n.s. 6: t. 1570 (1833). Syn: P. tauricola Boiss., Fl. Or. 1:109 (1867). [1:227] subsp. fulvum Kit Tan & Sorger in PL Syst. Evol. 154:111 (1986). Differs from subsp. persicum [ = P. tauricola] by the ovoid-globose capsules with long, dense golden-brown setae and ±flat, shallowly umbonate disc. Fl. 6-7. Rocky slopes and outcrops, stony steppe, 900-2790 m. Type: Turkey C7 Malatya: 74 km S.W. of Malatya, rock outcrops, 1550 m, 25 vi 1971, Sorger 71-45-29 (holo. Hb. Sorger!). E. Anatolia & Anti-Taurus. B6 Sivas: Gökpinar, 10 km S. of Gürün, 1800 m, Sorger 71-50-33! B9 Van: pass between Başkale and Güzelsu, 2790 m, Sorger & Buchner 82-57-45! C6 Maraş: c. 10 km N. of Andirin, 900-1000 m, Sorger 73-13-42! Endemic(?) subspecies; probably occurring also in N. Iraq and N.W. Iran. Ir.-Tur. element. Subsp. persicum has capsules with white-adpressed setae and an acutely pyramidal disc; examination of type material of P. tauricola Boiss. [1:227] has demonstrated that it is conspecific with P. persicum subsp. persicum which was based on a specimen cultivated in London (Cullen in Rech. fil., Fl. Iranica 34:13, 1966; Kit Tan & Sorger, op. cit. 112, 1986). Two specimens from B6 Adana: 7kmN. of Saimbeyli, 1400 m, Sorger 77-27-33! and B7 Tunceli: 30kmS.E. of Ovacik, 1200 m, Sorger 82-126-23! have capsules with a paler brown indumentum and also a less acutely pyramidal disc, and are thus ± intermediate between the two subspecies. Plants with completely glabrous capsules, in Fl. Turkey 1:227 (1965) referred to as P. tauricola Boiss. var. leiocarpum (Boiss.) Fedde, are now correctly named P. persicum Lindl. var. brachycarpum (O. Kuntze) Kit Tan in PI. Syst. Evol. 154:113 (1986) (Syn: P. pilosum Sm. var. brachycarpum O. Kuntze in Acta Horti Petrop. 10:156, 1887). |
