Fr., Suisse et Belg. 12: t. 685 f. 3209 (1934), as B. macrostachys. Annual. Stems to 80 cm, erect or ascending. Leaf sheaths softly and often densely hairy. Leaf blades to 20 cm x 3-5 mm,'usually pubescent. Panicle (2-)8-l 2(-20) x 2-8 cm, lax, open but commonly quite stiffly erect, sometimes drooping later; panicle branches and pedicels often stout. Spikelets 15-25(-50) x 6-10 mm, lanceolate or oblong, longer than pedicels, often densely hairy. Glumes lanceolate, lower 5-9 mm, upper 8-12 mm. Lemma 12-18 mm, oblan-ceolate, chartaceous with deep apical sinus; awn to 10 mm (to 20 mm on some upper lemmas), robust, rough, flattened, spreading or recurved when ripe, sometimes basally twisted. Palea shorter than lemma. Anthers 1-1.5 mm. Fl 4-7. Waste places, field margins, dry slopes, open woodland, s.l-1830 m.
