Stems 10-60 cm, erect or decumbent, minutely hairy. Leaf sheaths with dense, white retrorse hairs, basal sheaths remaining intact when dead, enveloping stem bases; ligule c. 0.5 mm. Leaf blades 7-15 cm x 2-4 mm, flat or slightly involute, with dense white hairs. Panicle 4-10 x 2-4 cm, erect, with few spikelets, branches ascending, shorter than the 1-2 spikelets they bear. Spikelets 15-25 x 3-5 mm, oblong-lanceolate, scabrid or shortly pubescent, pale green, florets somewhat divaricate when ripe. Glumes lanceolate, lower 6-8 mm, upper 8-10 mm. Lemma 10-14 mm, lanceolate-elliptic, rough or shortly hairy; awn 2-3 mm, straight or weakly out-curved. Palea little shorter than lemma. Anthers 4-4.5 mm. Fl. 6-7. Banks of crater lake, dry slopes, 1900-2900 m.
