B.variegatus Bieb., Fl. Taur.-Cauc. 3:79 (1819). Figure 12. Tufted or shortly rhizomatous perennial. Stems 25-50(-70) cm, glabrous or pubescent, erect. Basal leaf sheaths glabrous, sparsely ciliate Qr pilose, decaying into parallel fibres or remaining intact. Leaf blades 5-15 cm x 2-4 mm, cauline blades often short, otherwise all alike, flat, glabrous, glabrescent, sparsely ciliate or pilose on both surfaces. Panicle 4-9 x 1-5 cm, erect, narrowly to broadly ovoid or subglobose, rarely spiciform, congested; branches often unispiculate, shorter than spikelets. Spikelets 12-20 x 3-4 mm, elliptic, green-purple variegated. Glumes narrowly lanceolate, lower 4-9 mm, upper 7-11 mm, usually purple. Lemma 7-12 mm, narrowly elliptic, yellow-green below, purple above, sometimes with a gold-coloured margin, glabrous or hairy; awn 2-9 mm, straight. Anthers 3-4 mm, often yellow. 1. Panicle to 3 cm wide, narrowly ovoid; stem glabrous, plant otherwise glab-rous or sparsely ciliate; awn 5-9 mm subsp. variegatus 1.
