N. & tropical Africa, Mediterranean area, Caucasia, Crimea, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, C. Asia. Specimens from C3 Antalya (Antalya, 1860, Bourgeau 294 sub H. lycium Boiss., nom. nud.!) have been named var. bourgaei Boiss., characterised by having lateral spikelets acuminate at the apex, not obtuse as in var. bulbosum. Intermediates occur and it is clearly impossible to draw a distinct line between typical//, bulbosum and var. bourgaei.
