H. murinum L., Sp. PI. 85 (1753). Annual. Stems 10-45 cm, loosely tufted or solitary. Leaves flat, 2-7 mm' broad, glabrous or sparsely pubescent. Spike 4-10 x 1-2.5 cm, oblong, com-pressed, with fragile rachis. Central spikelet: glumes 1.5-3 cm (incl. awns), narrowly lanceolate, ± ciliate on margins, gradually tapering into a long awn; lemma 7-12 mm, glabrous, with awn 1.8-4.5 cm. Lateral spikelets male or empty; glumes 1:5-3 cm, slightly dissimilar, inner narrowly lanceolate, ciliate on margins in lower part, rarely glabrous; outer linear-subulate; lemma long-awned. 1. Central floret sessile or nearly sessile, with lemma exceeding lemma of lat-eral spikelets; palea of central floret 1-1.5 x that of lateral florets; leaves green subsp. murinum 1. Central floret pedicellate, with lemma not exceeding lemma of lateral spike-lets; palea of central floret 0.7-0.8 x that of lateral florets; leaves green or glaucous 2. Anthers of central floret 0.2-0.5 mm; prolongation of rachilla of lateral florets stout, yellowish-brown; leaves glaucous subsp. glaucum 2. Anthers of central floret 0.7-1.4 mm; prolongation of rachilla of lateral florets slender, green;leaves green subsp. leporinum 3. Hairs of spike rachis 0.2-0.4 mm var. leporinum 3.
