Annual. Stems 10-45 cm, loosely tufted or solitary. Leaves flat, 2-7 mm' broad, glabrous or sparsely pubescent. Spike 4-10 x 1-2.5 cm, oblong, com-pressed, with fragile rachis. Central spikelet: glumes 1.5-3 cm (incl. awns), narrowly lanceolate, ± ciliate on margins, gradually tapering into a long awn; lemma 7-12 mm, glabrous, with awn 1.8-4.5 cm. Lateral spikelets male or empty; glumes 1:5-3 cm, slightly dissimilar, inner narrowly lanceolate, ciliate on margins in lower part, rarely glabrous; outer linear-subulate; lemma long-awned.
