URSS ser. 1,5: t. 32(1941). Map 48. Caespitose perennial. Stems 30-70 cm. Leaves 2.5-5 mm broad, scabrid, sometimes pilose above. Spike usually 4-8 cm x 4-7 mm, usually dark purple, with fragile rachis. Glumes 5-10 mm, linear-subulate; those of central spikelet slightly longer than lemma. Lemma of central spikelet 5-7 mm, sessile, glabrous or scabrid towards apex, with short awn 1-5 mm. Fl 6-8. Wet meadows, damp ground near streams, 1600-3000 m.

Caucasia, Iran, Afghanistan, Ir .-Tur. element. A specimen from B8 Erzurum [Erzurum airport, 11 vii 1967, J.G. Ross(!)] has recently been determined by R. von Bothmer as cf. H. brevisubulatum (Trin.) Link subsp. turkestanicum (Nevski) Tzvelev, but does not appear to differ from H, violaceum.
