Densely caespitose perennial. Stems 8-40(-65) cm, glabrous or slightly hairy, usually erect, sometimes geniculate at base, 2-3-noded. Leaf sheaths persistent, glabrous to hairy; ligules to 2 mm, truncate; blades 2-10(-20) cm x 1-2 mm, flat or involute, green to glaucous, hairy or glabrous, mainly basal. Panicle 3.5-9(-14) x 0.5-2(-4.3) cm, cylindrical to oblong or occasionally lanceolate, rather dense, sometimes interrupted below, silvery-green or yellow. Spikelets 4-6.5(-7.3) mm, with 2-3(-4) florets. Glumes unequal, lanceolate, acute to acuminate; lower 2-4 mm, upper 3-4.7 mm. Lemma 3.3-6.3 mm, lanceolate, acute to acuminate, glabrous. Palea equalling lemma. Anthers 1.7-2(-3) mm. Fl. 6-7. Steppe, open stony places, meadows, mountain slopes, s.l-3000 m. Described from England, France & Switzerland (Hb. Linn. 85/17!). Widespread.
