Large tufted perennial. Stems 30-100(-130) cm, 3-4-noded, glabrous. Leaf sheaths glabrous; ligules 3-7(-10) mm, obtuse to acute, often lacerate, on vegetative shoots shorter and more obtuse. Leaf blades flat or involute, to 30 x 1 cm, upper surface glabrous, rarely pilulose to scabridulous, lower surface glabrous in basal part, scabridulous to scabrid towards apex or throughout. Panicle lax, 15-30(-37) cm, branches erect-ascending to spreading, lower ones paired, rarely in whorls of 4, scabrid in upper part. Spikelets ovate to lanceolate. Glumes green with hyaline or yellowish margins and tips, acuminate; lower 5-8-veined, upper 5-7-veined. Lemma ovate, acute. Awn terminal, slightly bent, caducous. Lodicules c. 1 mm, lower ones broadly ovate, uppernearly linear. Anthers 3-4.5 mm, bearded or with few hairs. Caryopsis ellipsoid, 3-3.5 x 1.5 mm.
