S. phleoides Steven ex Roemer& Schultes, Syst. Veg. 2:604 (1817). Syn: S. caucasica Scheele in Flora 27:55 (1844); S. polyathera C. Koch in Linnaea 21:399 (1848); S. nitida sensu C.A. Meyer, Verz. Pfl. Cauc. 21 (1849) non Ten. (1811). Map 98. Erect tufted perennial, 10-20 cm, elongating to 42 cm after anthesis. Stems striate, glabrous. Leaf sheaths pubescent or hirsute along veins. Ligule 0.5-0.7 mm, almost reduced to fimbriate hairy membrane. Leaf blades 8-15 cm x 1.5-4 mm, pale green, cucullate to acuminate, white-tipped, densely or weakly pilose on adaxial surface, sometimes hirsute-ciliate above sheath; margins and less often midrib scabridulous, thickened; stem leaves smaller. Inflorescence flac-cidly echinate, ovoid to broadly ovoid, 1-2 x 1-1.5 cm, usually suffused dark or greyish-purple at anthesis, becoming straw yellow. Spikelets 2(-4)-flowered. Glumes ovate, 3-4 x 1.5-2.2 mm, hyaline-membranous, glabrous, keel ciliolate, upper part of glume together with 1.2-2.5(-4) mm, scabrid or ± glabrous awn often bluish-purple. Lemma 3-4 mm, 3-5-fid; longest awn 1.5-2 mm. Palea lanceolate, 2-keeled, awns 0.5-l(-1.5) mm. Anthers oblong-linear, 1.6-3.2 mm, yellow or yellow tipped purple. Caryopsis obovoid, c. 2 mm, pubescent at apex. Fl. 5-8. Alpine screes and open turf (often grazed), nr melting snow, rocky limestone slopes, with Juniperus sabina, Fritillaria, etc., (1600-)2000-3505 m.
