P. setosum Jacq., Obs. Bot. 3: 8, t. 57 (1768). Perennial with a hard woody stock. Stems ± unbranched, erect, strict, 10-40 cm, glabrous. Lower ochreae strongly laciniate, hyaline. Leaves lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, flat or rarely somewhat revolute, greyish-green, less than 5 mm broad. Inflorescence a branched spike, the flowers in rather distant fascicles. Perianth white to pink, pink-veined, c. 3 mm, shorter than the bracts. Nut blackish, included in the perianth. Fl 7-9. Slopes, rocks, screes, 1300-3500 m.
