Leaves lanceolate to obovate, 2.5-7 cm, glabrous, entire. Flowers scarlet-red, rarely white; hypanthium coriaceous, reddish; sepals c. 8 mm, joined at the base; petals 15-20 mm. Fruit globose, 5-8 cm diam., brownish; seeds embedded in pulp. Fl. 5-6. Limestone slopes, scrub, 250-600 m. Syntypes: in regno Granatensi, Italia, Hispania, Gallia Narbonensi, Africa et America (Hb.
