The description covers both Turkish and Caucasian material which shows a wide range of stature, bract shape and flower size. The Turkish plant belongs to the small-flowered variant with multisect lower bracts described as D. freynii, but every transition is found between this and the Caucasian D. schmalhausenii, nor is the variation clearly correlated with geographical distribution.
